Family Sponsorship

If you are a permanent resident or citizen of Canada over the age of 18 with a family member who wants to immigrate to Canada as a PR, you may be able to help them become a permanent resident through family reunification.

The followings are family members who may be eligible for sponsorship:

  • Dependent child
  • Parent
  • Spouse, common-law or conjugal partner
  • Grandparent
  • Grandchild, sibling, nephew, or niece under 18 years who is unmarried and whose parents are deceased

There are defining terms that clarifies who a spouse, common-law or conjugal partner is and documents that can be submitted to proof relationship. A spousal sponsorship can be submitted as Inland or Outland.

Requirements for Sponsors

Applicants looking to sponsor their relatives must meet the following requirements:

  • at least 18 years old
  • living in Canada, or intends to return to Canada
  • able and willing to provide for the basic financial needs of the family being sponsored by signing undertaking or showing proof of meeting Minimum Necessary Income (MNI)

The standard processing time for a sponsorship application is 12 months from start to finish but can also take longer depending on the peculiarity of your application, the workload at the immigration office, and if you submitted a complete application or not.

Application Fees

Some fees will have to paid for processing costs (CAD):

  • Sponsorship fee: $75
  • Principal applicant processing fee: $475
  • Right of permanent residence fee: $500
  • Biometrics: $85
  • Total: $1135

In addition to the above, applicants will have to show supporting documents to aid their application.

Please note: these are standard application fees set by the IRCC, and are subject to change anytime. These are not fees charged by MOI Immigration Solutions.

Other Requirements

  • The application package usually contain documents to be submitted, forms to be filled etc as documents that applies to each applications might differ. Generally though, Police clearance certificates for residence more than six months and medical tests are required.
  • There are rules that applies to a sponsor’s undertaking financial responsibilities, for instance, if there is a fall out between a Sponsor and relative being sponsored, the sponsor remains responsible for them for a number of years regardless of if they have a cordial relationship or not.
